Let it go!

Isaiah 43:18 & 19 – “Remember not the former things, neither consider the things of old.  Behold I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth  Shall ye not know it?  I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

Most people, when their vacation is over, don’t leave their baggage packed until their next future trip. They unpack their belongings and put them back in the closet.  Then they store their luggage out of sight and out of mind until it is needed again.  So, why do we hang onto the baggage of circumstances or beliefs that cause us despair or bitterness.  This prevents us from enjoying the blessings of the present and the future.  Place these regrets at the foot of the cross.  They have already been forgiven and paid for by the Blood of Jesus.

Psalm 103:12 – “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”

Philippians 3:13, 14 – "Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended, but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things that are ahead. I press toward the goal of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

II Timothy l:7 – “For God does not give us the spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind”

As we leave the year of 2014 behind,
We need to clear the heart and mind.
We do not want to focus and ponder,
On what has happened back yonder.

Focusing on what the Lord may have for us ahead,
                Should be our priority instead.
It will be exciting to leave the past,
And on Him, our future cast.
Because God does not give us the spirit of fear,
We can boldly follow His Ways into the upcoming new year.

My prayer: “ Lord, may we always be a part of what You are doing now in our lives and in the lives of those You have given us to love and care for. We do not want to miss any divine appointments You have made for us now and in the future because  of our focusing on past hurts or bitterness. Help us to loosen our grip on the past so we can be free to walk hand in hand with You in this coming year.”

Peace in the Here and Now

Psalm 23:2 – “He makes me to lie down in green pastures.  He leads me beside the still waters.”

Psalm 23:6 – "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

Have you ever been in a peaceful place where the whole atmosphere is calm and serene?  I have. As a missionary I attended a convention in the mountains of Colorado.  On a very hot day, a small group of us ventured out to find a calm, cool spot.  Along one of the rural roads we spotted a mountain stream. We sat on a large flat rock with our bare feet dangling down into the water.  It was so quiet and we could hear the water flowing. We were experiencing the peace of Psalm 23:2. We returned to our meetings rested and refreshed.

Sleep also brings peace to our lives.

Psalm 4:8 – “I will both lie down in peace and sleep; for you alone O Lord, make me to dwell in safety.”

If you put your complete trust in the Lord, knowing He is providing for you and is protecting you and yours, then His Peace will prevail.

Philippians 4:4-7 – “Rejoice in the Lord always.  Again I will say rejoice!  Be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

My Scripture prayer daily and for this lesson is:

Isaiah 26:3 – “Thou will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You.”

This gently reminds me Who provides me with everything I need and Who protects me and those He has trusted me to care for, and Who to thank for both.  The results are heavenly: His Perfect Peace in the Here and Now!

Thank you for reading this.

God's Provision and Protection in the Here and Now

Before I became a Christian and started studying the Scriptures, I had heard Psalm 23 only during the eulogy at a funeral service. I thought it was telling the friends and family of the deceased that their loved one is in a better place. But, after studying each verse and thinking about what God was saying to us,I realized He was confirming that we could be in a better place while we are still alive.  His care for us is the same on earth as in eternity. We only need to completely Trust In Him. Before we can experience the Peace of God, we have to realize and believe that he is the One who Provides our every need and He also Protects us and everything He has given us.

Psalm 23:1 – “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.”

A need is something essential that we cannot survive without. All of the following needs were given to each of us by God: The breath of life. The ability to move about and think. Seeds to grow food. Animals to provide meat and milk. Families to love and care for. Shelter, clothing, rest and sleep.

Genesis 1:29 – “Then God said, “I give you every seed bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it.  They will be yours for food.”

Psalm 23:5 – “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.  You anoint my head with oil; My cup runneth over.”

A pessimist has a half-empty cup, and optimist has a half-full cup, but a person blessed by God has an overflowing cup. The phrase “in the presence of my enemies” seems to say that unbelievers are watching you to see how God is taking care of you and how you are responding and sharing these blessings. We are a living example of how God provides for us and it is important that you tell others and be sure to give God the credit.

Psalm 105.1 –O, Give thanks to the Lord!  Call upon His Name; Make known His deeds among the People.”

I would like to share with you one of His Provisions He gave to me. I had been able to help a young mother of two to buy Christmas gifts and food for her children. I had attended a prayer meeting and she was sharing with us that her husband had left her for someone else. She had laid away gifts for the children and was going to have to cancel the order. My husband had died recently and I had set aside some of his insurance money for pending medical bills. I went to the store and paid cash for her lay away and asked the clerk to call her and tell her to come and pick up her order. That way it could be an anonymous blessing. It was also God’s answer to her prayer. When I received the final medical bill from my husband’s illness, it was the exact amount less than I had expected to pay than the lay away had cost me.

My great grandson also had an anonymous blessing delivered to him at home. When he was only nine years old we discovered he could play music by ear. We knew he also would have to be able to read music. He was given a small keyboard for Christmas that year, as well as future piano lessons. As his playing progressed he had a need for a real piano for his practice time. We sent out the word that a used piano would be greatly appreciated. We knew of a family that had two pianos but had promised to give the second one to another friend. A few weeks later a truck pulled into my grandson's driveway and the driver asked if this is where my grandson lived. He delivered a real, full size piano in excellent condition. We asked him where it came from and he said he didn’t know. Someone had just asked him to deliver it to my grandson. We presumed our friend had decided to give her extra piano to us. When called, she said she still had her two pianos in her living room. We still do not know from where it came exactly. We don’t need to know the name, but we do know the real source of this provision.

God’s Protection – He protects us from walking away from Him and going back to our old sinful ways.

Psalm 23:3 “ He restores my soul, He leads me in the path of righteousness for His Name’s sake.”

Psalm 5:8 “Lead me O Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies; Make your way straight before my face.”

Psalm 25:4 “Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths.”

Believers are never alone spiritually. Praise the Lord! Not even on our final journey.

Psalm 23:4 – “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For you are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

A good parent is always there to protect their children. A Good Shepherd is always there to protect His sheep.  What a comfort it is to know that Jesus Our Savior Himself is protecting us and knows where we are at any given moment in time. I am grateful that I am one of His Sheep and am not still out there wandering about on my own - vulnerable and unprotected as I once was.

Thank you for reading this.

A little lagniappe*: Sometimes God uses circumstances to forewarn us of what could be a disaster. Case in point: One of my great granddaughters was having a bad dream and woke up crying. Her mom went upstairs to comfort her. While there, Mom noticed a strange light in the back yard by the garage.  Upon further scrutiny, it became clear that the trash can at the back of the garage was on fire. Flames were licking the back of the garage. Everyone was quickly evacuated and the Fire Department was called and put out the fire. It was caused by some supposedly cold and wet charcoal from a fire pit that had been thrown into the trash can. Some of the embers were still hot. What started as looking into the cause of a child’s crying, ended up being the protection of a family from a disaster.

*Lagniappe (pronounced 'lan-yap' - means 'a little extra' in Canjun.  Granny picked this term up during her time as a missionary in New Orleans.

What Does Christmas Mean to You?

Let’s look ahead to the coming ‘busy weeks”:

Will you make a decision  before this season’s start?
On what is most important? – Presents or His Presence in your heart?
In the midst of wrapping gifts in paper of silver or gold,
Does the “glitz” overcome the real story to be told?

God, Our Father, sent His Son Jesus to be born in a stable,
And to live a sinless life among men, as only He was able!
This same Jesus took man’s sins to the cross as if they were His own.
And covered them with His Blood before He returned to His Throne.
There is no doubt in my mind in the Christmas Season,
To celebrate the Birth of Christ should be the real reason.
He is God’s Greatest Gift – more precious than tinsel and trees.
But only if accepted by one who truly believes!
You can come to know Him personally on this Christmas Day,
If you believe that His Way to eternal life is the Only Way!

The following scriptures are God’s instructions for us to follow to make that happen.

John 3:16 –“For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Jesus Himself spoke these words to a doubting Thomas:

John 14: verses 5 and 6 – “Thomas said to Him, Lord, we do not know where you are going, and how can we know the way? Jesus  said to him – “I am the way, the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me”.

Acts 4:12 – “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved,”

My prayer today is this:  Dear Lord, I pray that my belief in you and my sharing the many blessings you have given to me has helped me to clearly convey to others  the message of the well known hymn “How Great Thou Art”.  Two scriptures in the Old Testament each, separately, say the same words.   They are 1st Chronicles 16:18 and Psalm 105:1:

“O  give thanks to the Lord! call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the people!"

A Thanksgiving Afterthought

Before entering into the Christmas Holiday Season, I would like to conclude the Thanksgiving Mode with another situation to be thankful for that most would rather ignore or bypass. It is Romans 8:28 –

“And we know that ALL THINGS work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

Also Ephesians 5:20 –

“Giving thanks always for ALL THINGS unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Have you ever thought of thanking God for a circumstance in your life that was neither pleasant nor joyful?  Did you ask Him, at that time, to teach you some good things  in that particular situation?Something good can come of everything  that happens to us, if we seek God and ask Him to show us what it is.

Let me learn from you, Dear Lord, the things you are willing to teach.
Let my mind be open to grasp the truths within my reach.
Then I can truly be thankful, even when things seem bad.
And I can truly be joyful instead of feeling sad.

Thank you for letting me share these thoughts with all of you.

A Thanksgiving Poem

My definition of Thanksgiving Day:  “ It is the beginning of another 365 days for all of us to live out “An Attitude of Gratitude for All of God’s Blessings”.  Of course every “leap year”, we have an extra day to be grateful.

THANKSGIVING

If you had to list the things you are thankful for,
Would it be a short list, or would the paper reach the floor?

I, myself, have  long list – on and on it goes.
The top priority is my family – each and everyone of those.

My friends run a close second and are important in my life.
Next is my home environment – away from stress and strife.

A job that I am grateful for – that adds onto my wealth.
A hearty appetite – that contributes to my health.

My Church is most important – that’s where my friends hang out,
That’s where we learn to handle what life is all about.

My Bible is my map and guide book and I consult it every day.
It shows me what road to take, so I don’t get lost along the way

I am thankful that I live in this great nation.
Where, so far, I can talk about Jesus without retaliation.

All of this would not be possible without God’s great love.
So, first, to Him I give thanks for these blessings from above.

Dorothy P.Witt – November 1996

Since everything we have comes from God, and we would have nothing without Him giving it to us, including our lives, we need to be thankful to God.

"Psalm 107:1 – “O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good!  For His mercy endures forever.”

Do we pause to thank God for a beautiful day, a good meal, a restful night, or do we take everything He gives us for granted? God is good to us.  Are we good to Him?

A closing thought from Granny Witt:

God’s goodness goes unnoticed in all the little things.
Take time today to thank Him for all the joy He brings.

Test Your Heart

Last week we looked at our speaking words, now let’s zero in on what God has to say abut our hearts. Our hearts and our words are both so important to God that we often find them linked together in the same scripture:

Matthew 12:34 and Luke 6:45 both say “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”

Many physicians recommend an annual stress test to determine if your physical heart is operating properly.  I believe Our Great Physician would also recommend an annual test of our spiritual heart. Are we following His Directions for our hearts?

Psalm 15:1-3 – “Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle?  Who may dwell in Your holy hill? He who walks uprightly and works righteousness and speaks the truth in his heart; He who does not backbite with his tongue, nor does evil to his neighbor, nor does he take up a reproach against his friend.”

Psalm 24:3-4 – “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?  Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart.”

If you think no one can read your mind, think again.  If your mind is filled with His teachings, He will be pleased.  If it is filled with your own ego, He will not be pleased:

Psalm 94:11 – “The Lord knows the thoughts of man.  That they are futile.”

God loves a perfect heart that is following Him but hates a proud and wicked heart:

Psalm 101:1-5 – I will sing of mercy and justice; to You, O Lord, I will sing praises.  I will  behave wisely in a perfect way. Oh, when will you come to me?  I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.  I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me.  A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will not know wickedness.  Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy; The one who has a haughty look and a proud heart, him I will not endure.”

The Lord loves a heart full of praise, privately and publicly:

Psalm 111:1 – “Praise the Lord!  I will praise the Lord with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright and in the congregation.”

This is the very first scripture verse I memorized as a brand new Christian:

“Psalm 119:11 – “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”

I want to share this story with you of how and when this came about.  In 1973, soon after my second husband had died, the church women invited me to a luncheon on Valentine’s Day.  The theme of the luncheon was the heart.  The scripture on my place mat was Psalm 119:11.  I followed the advice it gave me 41 years ago and am still doing so.  When we read the Bible and really meditate on what God is telling us to do, we will remember His instructions.  I have found that there is no circumstance in our lives that is not covered by a scripture.  When we are tempted or troubled, these words that we have hidden in our hearts will come to mind.  We will remember what God has instructed us to do and we will choose His solution. We will run to Him for guidance or forgiveness, whatever is needed at the time.

I would like to end this week’s Granny Gram #2 with a prayer:

“Dear Lord, I pray that my words and my thoughts will promote life and encouragement, not destruction and  discouragement.  Soften my heart and my words.  Please give me a tender, forgiving heart like Yours.  Help me to be a “grace giver” and not a “fault finder”.  I want others to see You in me.  Thank You, Lord.”

P.S. Since this Thursday, Nov. 27th is Thanksgiving Day, I will be posting a poem I wrote in November of 1996.  The contents are still relevant 18 years later.  Four more blessings have been added since then.  At that time, I had only one great granddaughter. I now have three more great granddaughters and one great grandson.  I Praise The Lord for each and every one of them.

Guard Your Words

We seem to have two choices for everything we do.  Let’s look at what we say when we speak.
We can either:

  •         Lift someone up in prayer or tear them down with gossip.
  •         Share our faith with them or deny our faith by ungodly actions.
  •         Be thankful or critical and judgmental.
  •         Be truthful or dishonest.
  •         Admit our mistakes or blame someone else.
  •         Apologize or ignore our bad behavior.
  •         Help someone in need or neglect them.
  •         Give a sincere compliment or insincere flattery.
  •         Be optimistic or negative.
  •         Be an encourager or a discourager.
  •         Tell others about God’s good deeds or take the credit for yourself.

There is no doubt the choices to make if we want to please God.  The Word says:

Psalm 19:14 - “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my Strength and my Redeemer.”

I say this above scripture as an antidote when my critical spirit rears its ugly head.  I find it very difficult to think in a critical way about someone or some situation at the same time I am asking God to accept what I am thinking and what I am about to say.

Psalm 34;1 – “I will Bless the Lord at all times, His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

James addresses this same problem:

James 3:8-10 – “But no man can tame the tongue.  It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.  With it we Bless our God and Father, and with it  we curse men, who have been made in His Image.  Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing.  My brethren these things ought not to be so.”

Replace criticism with praise:

Psalm 35-28 – “And my tongue shall speak of  Your righteousness and of Your praise all day long.

Determine to think before you speak:

Psalm 39:1 – “I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle.”

Sin breaks God’s heart and our heart should be broken also.

Psalm 51:15-17 -“O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise.  For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it;  You do not delight in burnt offering.  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart.  These, O God You will not despise.”

Don’t brag about yourself.  Give God the credit.  It’s not about us.  It’s all about Him.

Psalm 71:7-8 - “I have become as a wonder to many.  But you are my strong refuge. Let my mouth be filled with Your praise and with Your glory all the day.”

Keep in mind that God knows what you are going to say, before you say it:

Psalm 139:4 – “For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.

We should also think twice about what is in our heart before we open our mouth.

Psalm 139:23-24 – “Search me, O God,and know my heart; Try me and know my thoughts; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in Thy way everlasting."

I would personally like to add a few words of wisdom from my many years of experience. It is so easy to slip into a bad habit and not recognize it as an ungodly habit.  I believe it is necessary, every now and then, to take an inventory of our actions and see if they live up to God’s standards. We can always ask His forgiveness and start over.  I pray these scriptures have been helpful to you.  Please feel free to share my thoughts and advice with others.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
